BLOG TOUR, REVIEW & #GIVEAWAY - To Tame a Wild Heart by Gwen Mitchell

Book details:
To Tame a Wild Heart
by Gwen Mitchell
Publication date: June 21st 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Synopsis:
Audrey Taylor has carved a living out of society’s fringes using her supernatural abilities and street smarts. Freedom—sleeping beneath the open skies and under the radar—is all she’s ever needed. But when an ancient council of witches discovers her powers, Audrey must submit to their training or be stripped of her gifts and her memory. Audrey knows better than to trust anyone, and she’s never worked well with others, so it’s just her luck to be assigned a withdrawn and irritable falconer as her mentor. Even more disturbing is her desire to tear through his brooding façade and bare the man beneath when she should be focused on escape.

Corvin Wright values the solace of his duties and only finds peace among the birds entrusted to his keeping. But the council no longer sees a use for his unique gifts, and his sanctuary is in danger unless he can earn his place by babysitting a fledgling witch. The task becomes daunting when his apprentice turns out to be wilder and more broken than any creature he’s ever cared for. Her fiery spirit and dangerous beauty challenge every ideal of the life he’s built. As Audrey wrestles with her captivity and the bonds of responsibility laid upon her, Corvin must find a way to tame her wild heart before she breaks his.

Audrey escapes from the asylum holding her and lands right into another kind of jail. Faced with getting free and losing her powers, or staying in the coven to learn all about her powers and the Zyne, Audrey decides to bide her time, learn what she can, get fit and healthy and THEN excape and go back for the child she needs to save. Corvin's mother is head of this coven. He tends to the birds and is happy, for the most part. Being given a novice to train, or losing his precious birds is a bit of a no brainer, but Audrey is almost as broken as eagle currently under his care. He's gonna need to tend this wild one very carefully.

The overwhelming feeling I have for this book is this: Harry Potter for grown ups! I found myself comparing, at many points along the way, details that while not EXACTLY from the Harry Potter books, they have obviously been INSPIRED by them. BUT!!! This is not a bad thing, Its just what I need to say, and its all about saying what you thought of a book, and this is what I thought!

Getting over that, though and I really REALLY loved it! Audrey is a free spirit who knew she could do things others couldn't but didn't know why. Corvin is a bit of a recluse and thinks more of his animals than anyone else. An odd pair, but since Corvin's mother is an Oracle, I'm sure she saw this coming.

I loved Audrey's fight or flight response to most things, but having got this far alive, its to be expected. She does tame it a little as the book progresses but it never fully goes away. Once Corvin is made to see the error of how he'd been treating Audrey in his care (oh, not badly, not at all, just enough) he begins to see the real Audrey, the one who he falls in love with.

There is much going on, and not all is sorted. That Huhlwen (I think that's how it was spelt!) has a hidden agenda, getting Audrey to tie to him. Corvin won't be happy when he finds out. I'm assuming that there are other sorcerers out there, and enslaved witches.

Just deadly enough and sexy enough, with all the major players having a say, and you know how happy that makes me feel!

Oh, and special mention to the side kick crow, who really should have had a say, cos his antics did make me chuckle!

This is billed as book one, and  I can't wait to read the next one! First I've read of this author too.

4 solid stars

Cameron Stafford hires Gabriel for a night, needing nothing more than a pretend boyfriend to get his dysfunctional family off his back. With the money he has in the bank and his own hotel, why won't they just leave him alone? It doesn’t matter that a degenerative disease has stolen his vision, or that his last boyfriend was a bastard who tried to steal from him; for now he has purpose.

A new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

4 out of 5 (very good)

Gabriel is the second book in the Legacy Ranch series, and we find out a bit more about the young man who cried at the trial that happened in book one. His life hasn't been a good one so far, but he is broken enough that he thinks it is just fine. He lives with his pimp, Stefan, who controls every aspect of his life, and makes Gabriel pay for any misdemeanours that Stefan thinks has happened, or that he has just made up because he's not having a good day. Stefan has managed to get into Gabriel's mind and twist things around so that Gabriel is actually thankful for all that Stefan does for him.

Cam, on the other hand, appears to have it all. He runs a successful hotel, has plenty of money, and even has a bodyguard. Things must be good, right? Wrong! Cam's family, with the odd exception, are a bunch of BEEP, condescending, BEEP, know-it-alls, who think that just because Cam is losing his sight, he must be losing all of his faculties too. His father, well, enough said about him!

Cam and Gabriel end up together on a purely business level. Cam needs someone to pretend to be with him, Gabriel wants the money. However, feelings quickly become involved, and then it's anyone's guess. Six tries to tell Cam not to get involved, but Cam pays no attention. Their road is anything but smooth, but luckily the folks at Legacy Ranch are there to help... once Gabriel lets them in.

This is a dark book, with dark topics and it's not a HEA situation full of rainbows and glitter. This is hard, and horrible, and may be a trigger book for some readers. There is light at the end of the tunnel for Gabriel though, and I really hope that he will feature in the next book, just so I can see what progress he's made.

Gabriel is extremely well written, with no editing or grammatical errors that disrupted my reading flow. Like I've already said, it's not an easy book to read, but it is definitely worth it. I would also say that it isn't fully necessary to have read book one in this series, or indeed the Texas series which is where we first meet Jack and Riley. This book does stand on it's own merit, but personally I would recommend reading Kyle at the minimum, just to give you a feeling of what the Legacy Ranch series is about.

If you like your M/M Romance with angst, then I can definitely recommend this book/series. Just remember the trigger warnings!

Beneath the famous Brooklyn landmark, love is hidden but not denied:
All his life, Alexi Kharpov has dreamed of traveling to unknown exciting places instead of working at his family’s frozen custard stand on the famous Coney Island boardwalk. Every year is the same until a gorgeous man picks a spot in front of his stand to sing, captivating him with his beautiful voice. After two summers of listening, it might finally be the time for him to cross that boardwalk and take a chance.

Opera singer Cameron Maxwell has traveled the world, but the sight of the beautiful man serving custard to tourists touches his heart like nothing ever has before. A summer fling might be exactly what he needs to put his problems out of his mind, but the last thing Cam expects is to want the summer to last forever.

It’s a season of discovery for both men who learn to dig deep within their heads and hearts to decide whether secrets old and new should remain buried, or if love is too important to keep hidden under the boardwalk.

“I didn’t mean to shut you out before.” Cam faced him and held him around the waist. Their bodies meshed perfectly, and Alexi felt the weight of Cam’s chest and thighs press into his body.

“I hate talking about the past. You can’t change it, so what’s the point of rehashing things? I’m all about the present and the future.”

Cam’s mouth covered his, and Alexi held on to Cam’s hips as their tongues played against each other. He lost touch with the sound of the ocean; all he could hear was the furious pounding of his heart and Cam’s heavy breathing.

“All the time I watched you this summer, thinking you were cute and fun, never once imagining how much I’d like you.”

“I thought about you all summer too.” No longer shy about admitting it, Alexi nuzzled into the crook of Cam’s neck. “I guess it was a good thing we finally decided to say hello.”

“A good thing?” Cam took his face between the palms of his hands, and Alexi’s heart burst with happiness; he tried not to smile but failed.

“I think so, don’t you?”

“Yeah. The best.”

5 out of 5 (exceptional)

Under the Boardwalk is the latest book by Felice Stevens, an author that I have long admired. It's starts with last summer, as our two main characters first lay eyes on each other and want more. The timing isn't right though, so a year goes by. Now we are at this summer.

Alexi is an American, with Russian ancestry. He works for his father at the local custard stand, and dreams of travelling the world. Cam is the busker that Alexi dreams about. He has travelled the world, and found that there was no place like home (sorry, couldn't resist!). These two finally connect, and BOOM!!! We're off.

I love Felice Stevens' way of writing. She wraps you up, and immerses you in the story. This is one of her 'sweeter' books, I would say, although there is some low-level angst in here. One thing I will always be grateful for, is the explanation given to Cam about what the difference is between ice-cream and custard. As someone who grew up in England, custard is a hot, sweet, liquid that goes on top of treacle tart, or jam roly-poly. Not in a cone! I was thankful when the explanation was given as I then understood what everyone was eating! 😆

I don't think there were any editing or grammatical errors, but if there were, I missed them as I was so engrossed with the story. I love the epilogue, and love these two together. I am seriously hoping for more in this series, and also hope that we get to see a cameo from these two, just so I can find out if they're still okay.

Absolutely recommended by me, just be warned that you may lose time when you start reading this book!

BLOG TOUR, REVIEW & #GIVEAWAY - Mr. Prescott by Carlos Dash

Book details:

Mr. Prescott
by Carlos Dash
Publication date: August 20th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

Synopsis:

I’m the Mayor of London.

I’ve come to New York purely on business. The usual boring meetings with other politicians.

I don’t expect my time here to be exciting in the slightest.

But who’s that woman I met this morning? No, girl. That would be a more accurate term for her.

She’s only twenty-one years old. A college student. Someone who shouldn’t get mixed up with a guy like me.

But I can’t get her out of my mind. Every single time I close my eyes, I see her face.

How can someone I just met do this to me? That’s the kind of stuff that happens in movies. Not real life.

I know this will be a dangerous risk for me, but I can’t help it. I want her. I need her.

And whatever it may do to my career, I won’t stop until I have her.

Mr. Prescott is a standalone New Adult Romance novel told entirely from the point of view of the male lead.

Independent Reviewer for Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

What a sad, tragic story! It was absolutely heart breaking the tragedy she was dealt as such a young age. The author did such a great job writing the story though and dealing with such delicate subject matter. So I applaud her for the way she told the story.

Overall, it was a good story. It flowed well and it was a quick read. There wasn’t anything fantastic about the story that kept my attention or made me want to read it. The details and descriptions were good and on par.

It felt like the author wanted to gather a group of tragic events; bullying, pregnancy, death, rape, etc. and write about all of them in a book. While I appreciate the way that the author wrote the story and dealt with the subject at hand, but I think it was a bit much for one book.

Again, a good read. It wasn’t a letdown read and was good enough while I was reading the story. I can’t say I would chose to read another story by this author though, but every person has their own thoughts on what makes a great book and a re-readable story. I’d suggest to give it a shot if the blurb intrigues you though, you might love it!
